Medical Device PCB Manufacturing FAQ
Clarify the Scope Before You Release the Board
Practical answers about fabrication requirements, supplier evidence, construction and change control for medical device electronics.
Need a project-specific answer?
sales@pcbelec.comWhat does “medical PCB” mean for a fabrication order?
It describes the intended application, not a complete material, construction or acceptance specification. Provide the board role, approved fabrication data and governing customer requirements.
Define supplier conditions, inspection records and any special handling or evaluation separately. The application label does not establish finished-device qualification.
Are all PCBs used in medical devices required to be IPC Class 3?
No. The acceptance class must follow the governing project requirements rather than being inferred from the medical application label.
PCBELEC supports IPC Class 3 requirements. Specify the applicable board standard, revision, class and customer additions for the actual order.
What supplier documentation should be reviewed?
Review the documents required by your supplier-qualification process, including relevant certification scope, manufacturing site and any customer approval conditions.
Separately define order-specific records, such as microsection reports, specified verification, identification and change approvals. PCBELEC provides a microsection report with every order; additional records should be identified during inquiry.
How is ISO 13485 certification different from device approval?
ISO 13485 concerns a quality management system within its certified scope. It is not a product approval for an individual bare PCB or finished medical device.
Where required, review the certificate's entity, site, scope and validity. Device safety, performance and regulatory authorization require their own applicable evidence and processes.
When should HDI, flex or rigid-flex be considered?
Consider the construction specified by the routing, interconnect, packaging and connection requirements. Compact equipment does not automatically establish a need for every advanced board type.
For HDI, define the build-up and via structure. For flex or rigid-flex, define regions, bend conditions, thicknesses and interfaces. Review compatibility with the complete material system.
Can bare-board records establish biocompatibility or sterilization suitability?
Not by themselves. Bare-board fabrication and inspection records do not establish the biological safety or sterilization suitability of the finished device.
Identify the relevant contact or exposure conditions, evaluation object, method, responsibility and acceptance limits. Any additional activity must be separately defined and accepted.
How should material changes and repeat orders be controlled?
Reference the required board, revision and approved manufacturing definition. State substitution restrictions and notification or approval conditions before order acceptance.
Record proposed material, stackup, geometry or process changes and obtain the required approval before release. Confirm quantity, delivery format and documentation for each repeat order.
Does PCBELEC provide design, assembly or device-level testing?
PCBELEC focuses on custom bare PCB manufacturing. The service described here covers the agreed fabrication, inspection and delivery records, not circuit design, component sourcing, assembly or device-level validation.
For assembly inquiries, use the PCBJHY referral in the site footer. Any additional bare-board evaluation must be separately defined and accepted.
