Basic Electronic Components Used in Circuits

This electronic component guide will try to explain in a very simple way how common electronic components work. This guide includes the following electronic components:

  • Resistor
  • Capacitor
  • Light Emitting Diode (LED)
  • Transistor
  • Integrated Circuit (IC)
  • Relay
  • Inductor
  • Crystal
  • Fuse
  • Sentor
  • Electroacoustic Device

Resistor

Resistor

You’ll see resistors everywhere. And as the name suggests, they resist the current.

You use the resistor to control the voltages and the currents in your circuit.

Capacitor

Capacitor

You can think of a capacitor as a battery with very low capacity.

You can charge and discharge it just like a battery.

The capacitor is often used to introduce a time-delay in a circuit.

There are many capacitor types. Most commonly, we divide them into polarized and non-polarized capacitors.

Light Emitting Diode (LED)

Light Emitting Diode (LED)

A Light Emitting Diode – or LED for short – is a component that can give light.
We use LEDs to provide a visual feedback from our circuit.
For example to show that the circuit has power. But, you can also used them to make cool light-show circuits.
You see these components everywhere:
In your laptop, on your mobile phone, on your camera, in your car +++
And you can find many different types of LEDs.

Transistor

Transistor

This is probably the hardest of the basic electronic components to understand.
But don’t worry, it’s not that hard.
A simple way is to look at the transistor as a switch controlled by an electrical signal.
A transistor is similar to a relay because you can use it to turn on and off a current. The transistor is what makes amplifiers work.

Three IC circuit chips

Integrated Circuit (IC)

An Integrated Circuit (IC) consists of many basic electronic components.
It’s nothing mysterious or magical.
It’s just an electronic circuit that has been shrunk to fit inside a chip.
It could be an amplifier, it could be a microprocessor, it could be a USB to serial converter… It could be anything!

Relay

Relay

A relay is a switch that can be controlled electrically. If you connect power to the relay, the switch opens. If you disconnect the power, the switch closes. (Or vice versa).

Inductor

Inductor

Inductors are strange components made up of wire in a coil. They don’t like high frequencies.
It’s just a coil of wire – and you can make one yourself by making some loops out of a wire.
Sometimes they’re wound around a metal core of some sort.
They are often used to make radio oscillators, more efficient power supplies, and filters.

Crystal oscillator

Crystal oscillator

A crystal oscillator is a component used to create a precise frequency, such as a clock for a microcontroller.

Fuse

Fuse

  • Temperature switch/temperature fuse
  • Current fuse/fuse holder
  • Self-recovery fuse/other insurance components
sensor

Sentor

The sensor can feel the specified device or device measured and converted into usable signals according to a specific rule, usually composed of sensitive elements and conversion elements.

  • Electromagnetic sensor/sensitive element
  • Photoelectric sensor/optical fiber sensor
  • Gas sensor/humidity sensor
  • Displacement sensor/vision, image sensor
  • Other sensors
electroacoustic device

electroacoustic device

Electroacoustic device: refers to a device that converts electricity and sound. It uses electromagnetic induction, electrostatic induction, or piezoelectric effect to complete the electroacoustic conversion, including

  • speakers, headphones, microphones, and so on.
  • Speaker/Microphone/Pickup
  • Microphone/receiver/buzzer (Buzzer is an integrated electronic sounder with a DC voltage supply.)
Connector

Connector

CONNECTOR, also known as plugs and sockets. It generally refers to electrical connectors. That is a device that connects two active devices, transmitting current or signals.

  • Terminal/harness/cardholder
  • IC socket/optical fiber connector
  • Binding post/cable connector
  • Printed board connector/computer connector
  • Mobile phone connector/terminal block/terminal block
  • Other connectors
